Christmas in July

Matty was feeling very festive last week. He made “christmas monsters” (the nice kind that each spinach not people) out of paper cups and pipe cleaners (or “cleanerpipes” as he calls them). Then he made jingle bell collars for all his favorite stuffed animals and hung them by the chimney with care (in Phil’s athletic socks). We ran out of jingle bells before he ran out of festive projects, so he cleaned out his piggy bank so he could buy himself more jingle bells.

Our crepe myrtle is blooming and it is so fun to see my little garden all colorful. It makes me happy.

Isn’t Katie so cute. She is just growing up so fast. Matty thinks so too. He stood Katie up in front of him today to measure her and he declared excitedly, “She comes all the way up to my chin now. I’m almost an uncle!”

Fat cat sat!

Matty can read! (sort of) Yesterday morning Matty and I had a little learning time with the wipey board. He has been spelling words so well I figured he could decode words if he tried. So we started with the “at” familiy. Fat, cat, sat, bat, rat, etc. It was so cute, He’d say “fff aaa tt, ffat, faat, FAT!” His face would just light up when he figured out each word. We did some “ed” family words and a couple of others “my, the, and, on, if” so we could write a good story. I was so excited - It might have been the proudest moment of my life watching him ‘get it’ and figure out those little words!

Matthew gets really anxious about trying new things and meeting new people lately. We had to cancel his swimming lessons because he got to nervous and freaked out and refused to go. When he found out I’d gotten a babysitter so Phil and I could go out this week he freaked out again because it was someone he didn’t know. But then Phil told him how beautiful the young lady is we got to babysit. He got all blushed and “Garshy” and said, “I can’t wait to meet that babysitter!” He keeps asking me, “Is it Thursday yet?” This morning he ran into my room and said, “It’s babysitter day! I wish it was night already!” Three years old and girl crazy- Yikes!

Sparklers and Poppers

Fireworks were sort of an afterthought for us so Phil rushed to the nearest stand and got what was left. Phil was dissapointed that all the big stuff was gone (he’s quite the pyro), but he put on a pretty good show with some roman candles and flowers. We could also see a lot of big fireworks over the golf course right from the Dobbs front yard. Matty was brave enough this year to watch without getting scared and even did his own poppers and sparklers. We finished off the show by all throwing a handfull of poppers on the ground at the same time. It was quite the grand finale!

We went to celebrate the rest of the 4th at John and Emily’s. They have access to some really great community pools and parks in their neighborhood. Little Brooklynn is quite the swimmer! She was so cute in her little suit. Katie is always crazy about the water, but especially loved playing on the “weeee” (slide) with Matty. Phil and I had fun feeling old and fat jumping off the diving boards. Matty was impressed with our ‘mermaid’ diving. Its nice that he isn’t old enough to be embarrassed by us.

Happy Birthday, America!

We began our 4th of July celebration with the annual Woodlands parade through Market Street. It was very festive. We didn’t stay for the entire thing but what we saw was terribly entertaining. We saw marching bands (traditionally not the most attractive bunch, but with the ‘in’ shaggy hair-do’s were a shockingly homely, but talented, crowd), Coney the dancing Pine Cone mascot, a very overweight-but very self assured twirler in a bathing suit, and even Scooby Doo was sited marching down the street. They don’t let a little rain ruin a parade around here. It did rain, but the parade marched on. (Hmmm…Good thing the twirler wore her bathing suit.)

The New Bed

Our lastest craigslist.com secondhand find was this very cool bed for Matty. He informed me “I’m not a toddler anymore, I’m a preschooler! So I need a bigger bed.” The king had spoken, so we obliged. We were trying to find a used bunk bed, but ran across this loft bed with a fort underneath and slide attached and couldn’t resist. We’ve already had hours of fun sliding and hiding (and sleeping too.) Click here for some footage. Matty also figured out that he could use the underfort as a closet. He hung up the essentials (notice the BVD’s) and was very proud to show me his clever use of space.
