Matthew is learning to be more concise in his wording at prayer time when he’s really hungry. This morning he summed it all up with a “Thankful for da blessin’s and da bwekfast.”

Mattyisms - Brrrr
Matty made a scientific discovery today. He stuck his tongue to the tray in the freezer. Luckily it was plastic and he didn’t stay stuck. He was pretty proud of his discovery and said as he demonstrated, “Look mom, when I lick this it sticks like this, ‘thhee?’!”
Mattyisms - Inventor
Matty told me about an idea he had come up with to mix vanilla yogurt and ketchup together for a corn dog dip. He said, “I come up with lots of great ideas, all by myself. I’m a ‘conthinker’. That’s like a conductor, but in charge of good ideas.”
Mattyisms - Bizet Please
Matthew’s new favorite show to watch is the Little Einsteins. The kids on the show have adventures and learn about famous art and classical music. Driving in the car I flipped through the radio stations, including NPR, where opera music from “Carmen” was playing. Matty got excited and said, “Hey this is the song from Little Einstein’s Pirate Buhventure!” Sure enough, they’d played Bizet’s “Torreador” on Einstein’s this morning. Now he always wants me to turn the radio to NPR in the car so we can listen to classical tunes, which he calls, “Einstein Music.”

Mattyisms - Naughty or Nice
We told Matty that Santa only leaves a lump of coal for naughty kids. He told us, “I know who wants an ol’ black rock! David does. He was being naughty to Logan at preschool. He’s gonna get a black rock in his sock!” (David and Logan are his preschool buddies.)
Mattyisms - Follow the … hero?
This morning Matty has been humming the primary song, Follow the Prophet. Then I heard him singing his own new verse to the song, “Follow Superman, Follow Superman, Follow Superman, He saves the day-ay, Follow Superman, Follow Superman, Follow Superman, He i-is Brave!”

Mattyisms - Gender Sandwich
Matthew doesn’t usually like sandwiches, so I was trying to broaden his horizons. I asked, “I think you’d like a grilled cheese sandwich, would you like try one?” And he replied, “No, but I might try a boy one.”
Mattyisms - Another Puppy
Matty loves his ‘big puppy’, Katelyn, but he got another one that he could take for walks- Phil’s big metal measuring tape. He pulls it along, talks to it, and even gives it treats when it behaves well. Today he found another smaller measuring tape in our tool drawer. He exclaimed, “Another puppy!” and has been pulling along both ‘pups’ all morning.

Mattyisms - Composing
For family night we taught Matty that Grandma Bretz (his great-grandma) liked to write music. He wanted to compose some of his own songs for the piano. He drew letters all over computer paper then set it up on the piano and began to play. He’d even pause to turn the page on his sheet music. He’s very proud of the music he composed.
Mattyisms - Belly Buttons
Matty told Phil last night, “Bad guys don’t have belly buttons. Like the guy in the ‘Scripture Power’ song, Sin, he doesn’t have a belly button.” (The song goes like this- “Scripture Power, keeps me safe from sin…”)

Mattyisms - SuperFriends
This morning Matty has big plans for a pretend picnic. He told me when dad left for work that the other Superhero’s usually go with dad to work, but today they were going to stay home and have a picnic with us. (I didn’t know there were more imaginary friends besides the usual three who stay home with us every day. Today should be quite exciting with all of our Superfriends at home! I’m very curious how many guests he’s expecting for his picnic.)
Mattyisms - Fins
Matty likes to help ‘make’ breakfast every morning. (pour the cereal) He scoots a chair from the table over to the counter so he can reach. This morning he was scootching a chair and he said to me, “Look out Ariel, so I don’t run over your fins!”
Mattyisms - Cold
The weather finally got down to the 60’s the other day. Matty and I were playing on the trampoline. He was in shorts and a windbreaker and he yelled, “I love the Fall! I love being Cold!” You can tell he’s a native Texan when he thinks 60 degrees is cold.

Mattyisms - Cougars
I showed Matthew a picture of cousin Travis at a BYU football game. I told him Travis was saying “GO COUGARS!” He asked, “What’s a cougar?” So I explained a cougar is like a mountain lion. To which he replied, “No its not! A cougar is a football player!!”

Katie Jean - Buzz
Katelyn eats everything! (Paper, rocks, grass, glitter glue, etc.) It seems impossible to keep her from eating crazy things. She’s very quick. Outside yesterday I had to dig a bee out of her mouth. The head came out seperately from the body. Ewww! It made me think of that “Bringing home my baby bumble-bee” song. I think (hope) the bee was dead before it went in her mouth. YUCK!
Mattyisms - Disease
At the children’s museum they have pretend play areas. One looks just like an operating room and another like a school room. Matty and I first played Doctor and then he decided we should go to school. He wanted to be the teacher so he went to the chalkboard and Katie and I sat at a desk. He said, “Today we are going to learn about diseases.” And then he spelled out with magnetic letters on the chalkboard, “D-Z-S” and pointed at it saying, “Diseases, say it with me, duh-zee-s.”
Mattyisms - Technical Difficulties
Matty likes to pretend to be Superman. Lately he pretends he has “Laser eyes” and can take care of the bad guys just by staring at them. He will stare really hard at one spot and then make a sound like this, “wmmmm-wmmmmm” indicating his lasers are making contact. The other day he did ‘the stare’ without the sound effect, scrunched up his face, then shook his head, hit himself in the forehead a few times, and then said, “Ah nuts! My lasers aren’t working again!”

Mattyisms - Jake
Matty was trying to figure out which letter came after ‘J’ so he sang the alphabet song, “h-i-’jake’-a … It’s a! A comes after J!”
Mattyisms - Gum
Matty got some gum when he was trick or treating. He told me, “Its good to eat lotsa gum because it helps hold your teeth in so your teeth don’t fall out.”

Mattyisms - Big Stuff
Matthew’s nursery leader told me that he sat down beside her in nursery as she was watching some younger kids playing across the room. Matty said, as if he were 30 instead of 3 , “Aren’t the babies so cute?” He thinks he’s pretty big stuff as one of the oldest in the nursery.
Mattyisms - Bald
At Stake Conference on Sunday Matty, standing up on his chair, tapped me and urgently pointed across the room. I looked up to see what he was so concerned about. He said, “Look mom, that man doesn’t have any hair!” Sure enough. A bald man sat a few rows up. Then Matty said with a big shiver, “I be he gets coooooldie without his hair!”
Mattyisms - Uncles
I told Matty he was funny. He said, “Then I must be your uncle. Uncles are the funniest! Like Uncle Kyle- He’s sooo funny. [chuckle-chuckle]”

Mattyisms - Bored
Matty learned a new expression. “This is BOOOORing!” He doesn’t completely understand what it means or use it in the correct context all the time, but he loves to say it with feeling and really emphasize the “BO” part. I think he just likes how it sounds. For example, he doesn’t want to go to the store because its “BOring”. He doesn’t wan’t to go to nursery and preschool because they are also “BOring”. Last night he didn’t like what I made for dinner so he said it was “BOring”. And today he didn’t want to put his socks on because they were “BORING!”
Mattyisms - Headache
Matty exclaimed as he lay on the floor last night before bed, “My brains are killing me!”
Mattyisms - Traffic
We got stuck in some freeway traffic in downtown Houston. Matty noticed two big golden labradors in the back of a truck the next lane over. He told me the dogs names were, “Cocoa and Signk”. Ummm-okay. Luckily, in the stop and go traffic we got to pass our canine friends plenty of times. Matty had such a fun time “chasing” the dogs we hardly noticed it took us 20 minutes to go 1 mile.
Mattyisms - Creative
I am always amazed at the kooky and off the wall ideas, stories, and projects Matty comes up with. In reply to an elaborate explanation of his next creation all I could say was, “Wow! Way to think out of the box!” He looked at me like I was crazy and said, “I’m not in a BOX!!” Boy, was he right.
Mattyisms - Suddenly
Matthew likes anything about Superheros. We discovered comic books about Superman at the library. I don’t like to read comic books so I make him just look at the pictures and read them to himself. Its funny to hear him “read” the story. Everytime he turns a page he says, “And sunnelly…” (suddenly) So for 30-something pages he’ll say “and sunnelly!” with a dramatic pause as he turns the page, and then tell the story.
Mattyisms - My Puppy
This week Matty has been calling Katelyn his puppy. Its pretty funny because right now she acts a lot like a puppy. She crawls around, chases him, chews on his toys, eats the cheerios off the floor, slobbers all over, etc. This morning the kids climbed in our bed at 6 am to wake us up. Katelyn was crawling all over us, and Matty said, “I’m sorry, my pup is a little wild this morning.” And then he pointed at her and said in a stern voice, “Down, pup!”
