2006 August : Our Cherry Tree

Matty likes to figure out new tricks on the trampoline to show me. Today he came inside to get me so he could show me a new trick. Usually he’ll do a flip or cartwheel. One time he did what he called a “double-feet-off”. Well, this time he jumped and jumped and slowly his drawers fell down below his knees and then he did a flip and flipped them completely off. The “Tuh-duh!” in only his Superman underoos was too funny, and I could only laugh. We did make a new rule, however, that you have to have pants on to jump on the trampoline.

What a show!

Mattyisms - Repent

Before bed each night Matthew likes to hear a SuperHero story and a Scripture story. Tonight for the scripture story I told him about the conversion of Alma the Younger. I wasn’t really sure if he comprehends the messages of the stories, but its fun to tell him the stories anyway. But he surprised me when he said his prayer after story time saying things I had never heard him say before. He said, “…Bless that we can choose the right, and ‘bepent’ like Alma, and be nice…” Hmmm. I guess he understood better than I could have hoped.

American or Swiss?

Matty learned “America the Beautiful” over the fourth of July holiday. He likes to sing the “America, America” part. In the back of the van today he was singing the next line as well, “America, America, a sample of some cheese…”

Mattyisms - Action!

For the first time today Matty actually played action figures. He got his Mr. Incredible, Batman, and Superman figures and acted out a dramatic scene where Katie’s stuffed duck was stolen from the ducky mother (me) by the bad guy (Katie), and Mr. Incredible and Batman had to save the duck, while Superman stayed to comfort the mother until the safe return. Unfortunately Batman landed a little rough on the flight home and had to go to the hospital (the rocking chair) where he was nursed back to health by the head doctor (a stuffed giraffe). Whew! What an imagination. He did voices, dialogue, and the whole bit. I think we may have many action figure days ahead.

Mattyisms - Pudge

A couple of times a day Matty will go up to Katie and squeeze her cheeks with his fingers and say, “You are a PUDGE-PUDGE!” I’m always a little frightened when he pokes at her thinking she’ll get hurt or upset, but she always smiles or giggles. She must really love her brother to put up with all his ‘love’.

Mattyisms - Batman

Tonight for family night we took cookies to our next door neighbors so we could officially introduce ourselves. Matty was in character as batman all day and was using a white cloth diaper tied around his neck as his cape. Phil tried convincing him to take the cape off to go meet the neighbors, but to no avail. Matty said something like, “The neighbors will be glad to know Batman is here if they get scared.” So now our neighbors know there is a ‘Super’ nearby. I’m sure they feel much safer!

Mattyisms - Growing

Today Matty was eating a bag of skittles he got at the grocery store. I told him he needed to save some for another day so he didn’t get a stomach ache eating it all at once. I explained that skittles are a treat and aren’t a good growing food. He asked “If skittles don’t help me grow big, will skittles make me smaller and smaller like when I was a baby?” (Oh, how I wish dessert worked that way!)

Kade-isms - ABCs

Jodi related the following to me: “This morning Kade told Jodi he wanted to go see the animals at the “QSTRV” again. Jodi didn’t know what he was talking about, but trying to understand she had him describe the place with the animals that they had been before. After thinking a moment he remembered it was called the “UZM- the UZM at BYU” He wanted to go to the Bean Museum to see the animals!”
