Mattyisms-
When Matty says he doesn’t know how to do something he always leaves out the “know” part and says, “I don’t how!”

Mattyisms - Observant
Matty was wearing a baseball hat this morning. Before saying the prayer on our breakfast food he took off his cap, then prayed. We hadn’t taught him to do this, so I complimented him on the respectful gesture. He told me he was doing it just like the man did at camping. (A brother in the ward at the Father and Sons.) This boy doesn’t miss a detail.

Matty was blessed with a grateful heart. We are always charmed by his good manners. When we give him something he’ll say “Thank you, mommy.” Or “Thank you, daddy.” Last night at dinner he was eating some chicken stir-fry. When I sat down at the table he said “Thanks for the dinner, mommy!”
Matty speaks really well, but still has some unique ways of pronouncing things. When he want to get something to eat he’ll say “I need sumpin ina fridge.”
Here’s a few other choice silly words:
“Ming-o-sacko” for Motorcycle
“K-sared” for Scared
“Oggsqueam” for Ice Cream
“Kaboody” for Cowboy Woody
“Sunder” for Thunder
“Sootball” for Football
“Puh-sot” for Spot
“Tiktar” for Guitar
“Lie-buh-baby” for Library
“Pock” or “pocksickle” for Popsicle
“Juh-bob” for Good Job
Phil likes to lounge in his basketball shorts after work. Often finding them on the floor during my daily pick up I’ll toss them in the laundry or “hide them” (as Phil calls it) in a drawer. So Phil will often holler out to me, “Where’s my shorts?” The other morning Matty pointed to the dresser and said, “Daddy’s clothes?” I said, “Yeah that’s where daddy keeps his clothes.” He said, “Oh…WHERE’S MY SHORTS!!…like that?” He did the best grumpy Phil impersonation I’ve ever heard! I about died laughing and Phil was humbled to be imitated so accurately. He’s remembering to watch his ‘tone’. J
Matty likes to pretend his reflection in the oven glass is his cousin Kade. He chats with him and often has arguments. When he was wearing a hand-me-down shirt from Kade he hollered at the oven, “NO KADE-O! My SHIRT!!” Today he was sharing chips with “Kade” and dancing like ‘sad boy’ (Napolean Dynamite) like Kade does.
Matty like to do what daddy does. Tonight he grabbed a remote and took a power stance in front of the T.V. and aimed the remote high and proud jabbing it like a sword and said, “start duh movie, like daddy does.” He was wearing his cowboy boots and his face was so serious. It was hilarious.
Last night we made a “couch bed” and pushed our two couches together to watch a movie. I was feeling sick and had a big bowl on the couch, just-in-case. During the movie Matty figured out he could fit his rear in it and rock. He hollered, “My wock-a-bye chair!” We had a good chuckle.
Tonight I came home from enrichment and Matty had just gone to bed so I went in to give him a kiss. He was hiding under his blankie. When I came in he peeked his head out and, surprised to see me instead of daddy, said, ‘Welcome Home, Mommy!” He’s so sweet.
Our favorite Matty quote is when he says “Holy Moly” because it sounds like “Hony Mony”. He says, “Hony Mony! Fifty Dollars!” and “Hony Mony! Lossa Bikes!”
He has a good imagination already and yesterday while I was folding laundry he jumped in the basket, dug around, and pulled out Phil’s black dress sock, and said, “I got Wheezy!” He tucked it in his collar and ran out of the room- saving Wheezy just like “Kaboody” on Toy Story.
Matty often thinks of me more as a buddy then as a parent when we are playing together. When we are playing toys he won’t call me mom, just “Jana” or “Jans”.
The other morning Matty woke up and hollered from his bed, “Mama- Hey Guys! I waked up!”
Matthew likes to stick small objects in slots. He slips magnets through the vent on the bottom of the refrigerator, small papers through drawers, little cars into the rings of my binders on the shelves. We even found a child safety lock slipped in a whole in the dishwasher. Today I fell asleep while he was watching a movie. When I woke up I found my wallet was empty and he had slipped every one of the papers and credit cards from my wallet between the cushions in the couch and behind the couch. Luckily he always remembers where he hides things.

Matty pedaled his trike all by himself and swam alone (with arm floaties) for the first time today. Big boy!
August 28, 2005
Our little charmer Matthew makes friends wherever he goes. He calls anyone that we don’t know by name, “Friend”. He now blows kisses to all the cashiers at the grocery store and working personnel all over town.
Last night we went to the swimming pool with the Spilman girls. Jennifer was holding Matty in the pool. Noticing her long brown hair on the water he said, “Hey, your hair is floating!” Jenn asked him if his short hair floated too and he said, “No, it swims!”
I asked Matty what he wanted for dinner last night and he sang at the top of his lungs, “Maca-noni and CHEEEEEEEEESe!” He held out the cheese in a big vibrato. Phil and I died laughing at the unexpected musical answer.
Every morning when Phil leaves for work, Matty has to run outside the apartment with him and wave at the top of the stairs until Phil is out of sight. He won’t let me come outside to watch and if I peek out the door he’ll run back, push me in, and shut the door. “Mommy, stay inside. Be back in a second.” Mr. Bossy says holding up one fat finger for “one second”. I can hear him holler from inside the house (as probably all of our apartment neighbors can) “Bye Daddy! Love you! Be Safe!” He runs back in the door when daddy is gone and looks very happy and proud.
The other morning Matty came into my room and tapped me really softly on the arm and said sweetly, “honeybun” its time to get up.” When I kept my eyes shut he whispered again and patted a little harder “HONEYBUNS, time to wake up!” And when I opened my eyes he yelled, “Mama! Wake-up!” I don’t know where he got that honey-bun thing. So funny!
He put the laundry basket on his back yesterday and crawled around and said, “Here’s my shell like Franklers.” (He calls Franklin the turtle from our books “franklers”)
November 4, 2005
Matty calls his magnadoodle and “Magnet Noodle”
He likes to tell people he’s going to have a “teeny tiny baby sister” and that he’ll be the big brother. He also says he’ll be nice and “won’t push” her. When we ask him what we should name his baby sister he says, “Baby Katelyn.”

Today I was sitting on the chair in Matty’s room while he was playing cars. He stopped playing for a second and said, “Can I come up by you?” He crawled up on my lap, gave me a big hug and said, “I love you mommy, I love you so much.” And then he got down and went back to playing cars.
Matty likes to stand on the bathroom scale to weigh his self. When the digital numbers come up he says, “Wow! Twenty Half and a Pounds!” (He really ways about 30.)
Yesterday afternoon we’d had a busy morning and decided to relax and paint pictures at the kitchen table. After a while of concentrated and quiet painting Matty yawned and said, “Think I’m feelin’ Snoozy. Better take a nap before daddy gets home.” And without a hitch or fuss he marched off to his room for a nap.
We’ve been telling Matty when he eats his dinner he’ll grow up big and strong like daddy. He likes to tell us, “I ate my carrots, put ‘em in my mouth and went all way down to my tummy. I grow big and strong like daddy. See my muscles!” And then he flexes.
When hopping in the shower today Matty laughed and pointed at my growing belly and said, “we’re taking a tubby with Baby Katelyn too!”
Over Thanksgiving at Grandpa Cherry’s house Matty learned to play ping-pong. He loved to yell out “I’m the Ping-PON player!” (He got pretty good at serving after a bit of practice.)
Matty’s new phrase to call out to Phil when he’s leaving for work is “See you later crocodile- After Alligator!!”
Matty is the rule enforcer. When we were driving with Grandma Lee she began backing out before putting on her seat belt. Matty yelled from the back seat, “Buckle Up Grandma! So you don’t crash!”
We babysat for our friends the Billings last night. Matty kept giving 6 month old Brenna hug after hug. He’s going to be a sweet big brother. He sure loves babies.
Matty got to spend time with Grandpa Feltis over Thanksgiving and picked up the phrase, “Holy Smokes, it’s getting dark!” (Grandpa said it was a good thing they don’t spend more time together or he might have a little more color in his vocabulary.)
Matty is very thorough in his food prayers. He thanks Heavenly Father for each individual item on his plate, usually including beverage, plate and fork as well!
After working hard to clean the fridge I brought Matty in the kitchen to admire my hard work. I said, “Look Matty, doesn’t the fridge look so nice and clean?” and he said, “Wow mama! You’re ‘Mazing!”
Tending to blemish in the bathroom mirror the other day, Matty came up behind me and shaking a finger said, “Don’t scratch at it, mama!”
Matthew’s preferred counting sequence goes like this, “one, two, five, six, nine, ten, eleventeen, thirteen, eleventeen, eleventeen, ELEVENTEEN!”
When we were getting ready to fly to Utah for Thanksgiving Matty said, “We gonna ride an airplane? We’ll fly just like Peter Pan!”
December 18, 2005
For some reason Matty’s decided he can shorten the name of anything. For example, referring to his wooden pull toy dog that he named “Scrufty”, he said, “I’m gonna take Scruft in the Kitch.” (Kitchen)
He pretends his baseball bat is a dirt bike and will ride it all over the house. He even kick starts it.
Today he didn’t want to be in nursery. He stayed up late with us at a Christmas party the night before and was overdue for a nap by the time nursery rolled around. He cried himself to sleep in the corner of the nursery room. On the drive home from church he was telling me what had happened, and realizing in his slumber he had missed his favorite part of nursery he yelled from the back seat, “Oh NUTS! I forgot to have snack!!” He was truly disappointed.
Last night at our friends Christmas Party the adults were playing name that tune to rock songs. Matty got in the middle of the group and did some sweet break dancing moves to the songs. I was a little embarrassed, but even more when Phil told everyone he’d learned his “moves” from his mother.
Matty went, uh… ‘big job’ in the potty for the first time the other day so I let him where spiderman underpants. He walked so tall and proud with his new underpants! He was playing a little while later in his room when I heard him scream, “AUGHHHHH! I peed on spiderman!” Sure enough, he’d had an accident. He’s excited to try wearing his “spidermans” again when he’s ready.
December 26, 2005
Last night Matty kept waking up because he was hungry. I told him we would eat in the morning. At about 4 AM I hear him shouting to me from the other room. “Mom! Mom! I have a good idea!” When I went into his room he said “I have an idea, we could eat breakfast or sump…” Casual as anything- like that’s a normal good idea at 4am!”
The word “sump” is his new shortened word for “something”. Which he pronounces “sump-thing”. So now it is just ‘sump’ for short. For example: “We could go on a buventure or sump”, or “We could have chix (Kix) or waffles or sump…” and “Um, I think his name is Thomas or sump…”
Matty refused to hold Phil’s hand when walking in a parking lot today. He insisted he was going to hold his “own hand” and clasped his chubby mitts together in front of his tummy to walk across the parking lot.
January 13, 2005
Matty went the entire day in big boy underwear today with no accidents. We were so proud. He calls his underwear “unders”.
Matty’s imagination is getting more and more vivid. He pretends he, I and daddy are all something/someone. For instance: he’s spiderman, I’m ‘nice green goblin’ and daddy is ‘mean green goblin’; He’s Bert, I’m Mary Poppins; He’s blue puppy, mom is ‘girl puppy’ and dad is ‘big fat puppy’. (Hee hee!! Poor Phil!) He’s baby dragon and I’m mama dragon. Sometimes it is hard to keep up with “Who I am” each day, but he’ll correct me if I forget. “You mean, spiderman mom?”
Mary Poppins is his new favorite movie. Especially the “Step in Time” part. Today when his friends Alex and Leah came over to play he instantly ran to his room pointing “Come on guys! Come and meet Jane and Michael!” They were thoroughly confused when they saw no one in his room. But Matty insisted his imaginary friends “Jane and Michael were playing in the ‘pock’.”
The other day Matty pushed on my protruding belly button and said “Ding-Dong! Baby Katelyn in there?”
March 23, 2006
Matty loves his new baby sister and gives her sweet kisses all the time and calls her “Sweet Girl” in a really high voice.
Matty pulled the blanked out from under Katie when she was in the bouncer seat and she was dumped face first onto the carpet. He yelled to me, “Mom! Baby went Boing!” He thought it was a pretty neat trick, but I about had a heart attack! She was only five days old.
Matty sings the funniest songs and makes up his own lyrics to movie favorites if he doesn’t know the words. Some funny tunes he’s sung this week-
“London bridges falling down, my hair leggy.”
“Take me out to the ball game…buy my mama some Scooby snacks.”
“Let’s go fly a kite and send it snoring.”
“Let’s get down to bizness to feed the huns.”
Today at dinner he yelled out of the blue, “They call me MISTER PIG!!” Just like pumba on the Lion King. It was an awesome imitation and caught us completely off guard. It was hilarious.
April 23, 2006
While Phil was rocking Matty before bed he said out of nowhere, “I think Jesus is coming soon… Yup…” We haven’t talked to him about that yet, so it was in a surprising snippet to hear from our two year old.
Matty decided that baby Katelyn should say our family prayer the other night and that he would help her know what to say. This was the prayer, “Heavenly Father, I’m thankful for my big brother Matty, name of Jesus Christ, Amen.”
And the other night his prayer was “I’m thankful for Jesus and this country- ‘merica”
Matty won a goldfish at he ward chili cook-off carnival. He named is “Orange”. Phil took him to Wal-Mart to buy some friends for Orange. Their names are Slurp, Flubber, Big Daddy, and Spot.
After getting dressed in my dress for church this morning I went in to get matty ready. He smiled really big and said “Wow, you look really beautiful in those clothes- like Sleeping Beauty!”
Matty came to wake me up in the morning. We had watched the Star Wars movie with the Ewoks in it the night before. He woke me up by tickling my toes and saying “Tickle Tickle, Yub-Yub.”
Matty likes our new house. This morning he asked, “Do we get to stay here? I sure like my new house. It has lots of room for stuffs.”
May 27, 2006
Matty got locked out of the front door when he went outside to help Phil water the lawn. I heard him hollering and banging on the front door and let him in. He said breathlessly with the cutest little frown, “I was locked out. I pushed and pushed- Even “Open Sesame” didn’t work!”
Matty unfortunately doesn’t let anything pass by. He picks up on every look, tone and phrase. He’s learning about nice words and not so nice words. When he learns a new not nice word he repeats his whole list of not-nice words to me. For example he learned that “shut up” is a naughty thing to say. He said, “Oh, its not nice like “dangit” “cwapit” (he gets crap and dangit mixed up and says ‘cwapit’) and “balls” (in reference to the body parts.)” But then he’ll say, “But I can say, “OH NUTSO!” that’s not naughty!”
He is so interested in drawing. He gets so intent when he works on his art projects. We went to the Woodlands Art Festival last weekend and he was just fascinated by the artists he saw that were working on location.
Coming out of the stadium from an Astro’s baseball game the other night there was a man on the street corner playing a saxophone. People were dropping money in his hat as the crowds pushed by to the parking lot. We were on the opposite street corner. When Matty figured out where the music was coming from he made us stop (amidst the post-game foot traffic) right on the side walk so he could watch. He was mesmerized and asked if we could get closer. When we were walking away he said, “I sure wish I could play a saxophone when I get big!”
Matthew loves his baby sister. The other night when I was rocking him before bed he asked if he could hold Katie all by himself. I put Katie in his lap and he held her so sweetly. She’s almost as big as he is! He gave her sweet little kisses and giggled at her smiles. He said, “I sure love my baby sister!” It was the sweetest moment ever!
