T-ball Trophy

Matty had an excellent last game this weekend. He hit two really excellent hits to right field and played really well at first base, stopping and even catching a few. Like his coach said, “You kids learned a lot this season. You ran to the bases in the right order, learned to hold a bat, and throw a ball. Its been a big season.” He was very proud of the trophy he received at the team party after the game. Before Phil took this picture he had to say, “Quit kissing the trophy and smile!” Today before church matty said he’d rather sit home and stare at his trophy. I told him that was like worshipping idols and that wouldn’t be okay to do instead of go to church. He made a sign for us to hold up at the game that said, “Go Matty! Yay! You can do it! GO!” He wrote it in pencil on a piece of computer paper and taped two pencils to the bottom to hold up the sign with. I asked if we should make a sign for his team too and he said no. Just for him. I guess teamwork is what they learn next year in t-ball.

Go Reds!

Well, the T-ball season is in full force. Matty and his team, the “Reds” are doing well. There are no outs or strikes in 5 year old t-ball and everyone gets a turn to to bat. The last one in the line-up gets a ‘home-run’ so they can clear the bases.
Matthew’s coach, Coach Clay, is excellent with the kids. He’s very encouraging and praises the things they do well. My favorite part of T-ball is when the fielders tackle each other to get the ball so they can throw it to first base. They are still learning to share, but they are very enthusiastic. Good fun!

I found out today that Matty has his best buddy’s phone number memorized. (All ten digits!) I was napping with the baby when he happily bounded upstairs and announced to me that he had called Tyler and Ty’s mom was coming to pick him up to play. I was so surprised that he had called someone on his own, but even more surprised at what he said to get invited. He told me that he said to Tyler’s mom, “I’m lonely! Get me out of this dreadful place!”

We had a family night lesson on temple work and the blessings of eternal families. We were discussing how we have ancestors waiting for us in the spirit world and Matty asked, “Do we have any ‘anbrothers’ too?”

Matty loves exploring and perching on his new playset. He has climbed on every part of it that I never imagined kids climbing on. He’s getting to be a very confident climber. His favorite game is pretending its his space ship. We have had all sorts of “out of this world” adventures with him as head astronaut. Hearing him say, “Mom, can I play outside some more?” has been worth every penny we paid for it.

The kids got to join in an easter egg hunt for playgroup. Phil had taken the day off so he got to come along and it made it so fun to do as a family. We had a picnic at the park and played and had the easter egg hunt with our ward friends. Katie loved wearing the little sheep ears and didn’t take them off the entire time. She was so cute! She got the hang of hunting for eggs this year and found plenty. Her favorite thing was the jelly beans. She yells, “basket, beans, beans, beans!” whenever she wants more candy. Matty was very serious about the hunt and gathered his 12 eggs in record time. He was kind enough to share some of his spoils with daddy. He wins the fast and sweet award. Happy Easter to all! We love and miss you!

Day out with daddy and best buddy Tyler! Matty got to go see real space ships at the NASA space center. Phil took the day off work and took Matty and Ty on a little field trip. The boys had a really good time and their favorite parts were playing on the giant slide in the play center there and the magnets Phil bought for them at the gift shop. They’ve both been playing with their magnets nonstop for days. Simple pleasures for their bright little minds.

An opening came up at Matty’s preschool in the academic class so Matty checked it out and decided to join in place of his art and science clubs. He really loves being in the “Gingerbread Class” and what’s not to love? His classroom looks like a cute gingerbread house and his teacher Miss Laura is sweet as candy. They have quite the full curriculum and do lots of paper projects and focus a lot on Math- Matty’s two favorites. The teacher said she’s had to make their math games trickier since Matty joined the class because he can figure out the answers faster than the other kids. (He definitely gets that from his daddy!) The other day I heard him say, “Bonjour Mes Ami” to his friend. I guess they are learning French too?! Since he only attends two days a week the teacher sends him home with ‘homework’ that he misses out on MWF. He loves to do his homework and is bummed if Miss Laura doesn’t send any home in his folder. He’s learned to keep it up high after last week when Katie “helped” and colored all over his work. This week he got to bring home the class puppy “Mocha” to take care of. It’s a Webkinz stuffed puppy so he feeds it online and writes about their adventures together in a journal Mocha carries in her cage. Now that’s a family pet i could handle!

Matty’s favorite way to spend the day is playing with his best buddy Tyler. They never want to part and can play happily together all day and then some. Unfortunately he is in kindergarten all day so they don’t get to play nearly as often as they would like. Tyler has an awesome playground in his backyard where they spend many happy hours inventing complicated pully systems and zip lines. An added bonus is Tyler’s younger sister, Claire, who Matty loves to play with also (and is in love with). Katie has also become enamored with Tyler and exclaims enthusiastically whenever we visit their house, “Ty! Ty! Ty!” Katie loves to play ‘chase’ and will run around and around the living room, singing “bee-bah-bah-bah-beeee!” (superman theme) with her silky blanket tied around her neck. Its her favorite when Matty and Tyler play chase with her and she can be the monster. She makes such a cute monster. When she pauses to catch her breath she says, “Phew! Fast like Ty!” This morning she asked for him as soon as she woke up. When I told her Tyler was at his own house she said, “Ah man!”

Matty has been very proud of himself for getting his own breakfast these past few days. The first couple of times he got breakfast just like mom did for him- bowl, spoon, honey-nuts, milk- but somewhere along the line he realized, “hey nobody’s around to tell me what to do…hmmm.” So one morning he announced he’d poured chocolate syrup over his cereal. Another morning he raided the cookie jar before getting his cereal. And this morning I discovered he skipped breakfast altogether and used his empty trick or treat bag to fill with any sugary items he could find in the cupboards. In his bag he had poured the contents of an opened bag of marshmallows and chocolate chips, cookie sprinkles, and some nerds candy he found in the pantry. Nutritious!
